Robert’s born surname was not actually “Wise.” He was raised by a Wise family, however his real father’s name was “Bumbarger.”1166
Robert Wise beat his wife Joyce a lot. He’d beat women up but not men. He was a mean son of a bitch. His mother may have been a McGaughey.51
The name of the Volkswagen car illustrates the problems of the transported v (pronounced /f/ in German) and the w (pronounced /v/). Few Americans pronounce the word in the German way, “fokes-vah gen,” but one may hear “fokes-waggin,” “vokes-waggin,” and several variants. Similarly German Wagner is everywhere in America pronounced “wag-ner” except by the musically knowledgeable, Vogel <birdlike> is pronounced with /v/ unless the family switches to an f spelling, and Weis or Weiss is so steadily pronounced with /w/ that many a family has given up and changed the name to Wise or White.1167

Joyce was an identical twin with her sister Joann. You could not tell them apart. For about ten years there was a falling out between the two sisters and they would not speak to ine another during that time.51

In February 1956 Robert and his family shared a two-dwelling home with Andrew McGaughey, his wife Helen, widowed daughter Barbara and 14 month old granddaughter Maxine. Located in Dimeling,* Clearfield, PA, the home tragically, and without warning, caught fire killing Robert and Joann’s 2 year old daughter Patricia.59
It’s probable that the McGaugheys and the Hulls, mentioned above, were related, but I’m not sure how. In addition Barbara’s father Andrew was killed in an auto accident in a car driven by a Jack Wise. I believe I once heard that Barbara McGaughey and Joyce and sister Joanne Hull were cousins, but I am unable to find any connection between the families.3
