Source indicates Nicholas was born in GERMANY, MD, VA, or PA.
His daughter Nancy Wertz Hooks' death certificate indicates Nicholas was born in Germany but different census data says MD or VA or PA.
Nicholas served in the War of 1812 and is buried in Chaneysville Methodist Cemetery with a headstone provided by the Government [See Headstone photo].
According to the 1920 U.S. census, Nicholas Wertz spoke German.

A Paul Wertz is featured in the book "History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Counties, Pennsylvania." (1884), pp. 379-380. According to the book, he emigrated from Germany, and settled in Bedford County prior to 1771 living in Cumberland Valley. His children were John, Paul, Jacob, Henry. Betsy (McFerran), Kate (May), Mary (Lee), Rebecca (McFerran), Sarah (Mahoney) and Ann (Brosier) all of whom had died by the writing of the book in 1884.
It goes on to mention that John Wertz, son of Paul, was born in Germany and came to this country as a boy. He reared nine children: Henry, William C., Bonner (deceased), Josiah, John J., Rachel (Hardman), Catherine (Lee), Mary (James), and Rebecca (Easter). [I have a photocopy of this article, with a few additional facts, and will create a source should I find these individuals are related.]
