Gleason was on the entertainment planning committee for the visit of President Franklin Roosevelt to Charlottesville when he gave a 4th of July broadcast address from “Monticello” the home of Thomas Jefferson.1185

James Emmett was a prominent figure in local politics serving on the Charlottesville city council for twelve years. He was elected mayor for the term 1942-44 and later served eight years on the city library board.

Mr. Gleason and his wife Helen in 1946 purchased what’s become known as the Abell-Gleason home located in the historic downtown district of Charlottesville. at 521 North First Street 22902. The two-story brick building built in about 1859 is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gleasons were said to be “arguably the most significant owners” of the historic home, making changes that brought it into the modern era adding electricity and plumbing. They lived in the home until they sold it in 1974.
