Misc. Notes
Mary Franks Smith was born in 1815 in England. Little is known of her early life. She was left an orphan early, and lived with a married sister until she was married herself. She worked for a living, and it was while she was at work that she met her future husband.

Mary was married on September 5, 1836 to George Taylor. From this marriage there were born six children.

When the Gospel message of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came to them about 1847, Mary accepted and was baptized. A few months later, George accepted also and was baptized on June 3, 1847.

After joining the Church, the family began to prepare to go to Zion. In the spring of 1858, Thomas, Mary’s son set sail for America with the Orton family and their children when he was about seventeen years of age. On arriving in New York, Thomas secured work and saved enough money for his father to join him. George and Thomas then worked for another two to three years to save enough to bring the other members of the family to America. They arrived early in the spring of 1861 in New York. They worked longer to get enough to bring Kezia and her husband to America. They arrived in the winter in 1862.

The families finally left New York in the fall of 1863, traveled by rail to Fort Laramie, Wyoming, and then traveled by ox-team to Salt Lake City. They arrived in October, and left almost immediately for American Fork, Utah.

They later moved to Summit, in Iron County, and then in 1865 they moved to Paraowan. A log house was built, and here George and Mary lived the remainder of their lives.

Mary and George were very religious, hard-working people. To help return money to the Perpetual Emigration find they owed, George was given the job of going back across the Plains to help others coming to Utah.

Mary Franks Smith Taylor passed away on March 7, 1871 at the age of fifty-six. Her husband, George, spent his later years living in the home of Ann, his daughter. He passed away in Parowan on February 1, 1876 at the age of sixty-five years. They are both buried in the Parowan City Cemetery.

Mary was always faithful to the Church following their baptism. She loved the Gospel and the joys it brought into her life. She and her husband enjoyed the blessings of living in the free land. They were true, dedicated pioneers, who helped in establishing Zion in the tops of the mountains of the Utah Territory.
