Martha was the oldest child of Philip and Mary Erhard. It's unsure when she was born. Martha was a small statured child. One day her father, Philip, and John Curry were cutting timber near their home and she was bringing them a drink in the field. A tree that they were felling struck and killed Martha. She was the first person buried in the New Millport Cemetery in 1846.
