Hiram was born to Sarah Frampton Woods (1788-1882) and Andrew Barrett (1788-1865). Andrew came to this county from London, England with his parents about 1800 and settled in Chester County, Pa. were he married Sarah of Welsh-English descent. Andrew reportedly taught school for fourteen years and was a weaver by trade. Andrew moved to Cambria County in 1838, and in 1840 purchased land in Ferguson Twp., Clearfield County. Andrew and his son(s) cleared timber for a farm, and followed his trade of weaving flax into cloth for clothing and wool into blankets. Andrew and Sarah had 13 children. Andrew died in Ferguson Twp. in 1865. Sarah traveled to Wisconsin to live with her youngest daughter Terza Barrett Mason (1838-1940), and died there in 1882 at the age of 94.
Hiram, the eldest child, resided for a time in Columbia County, Pa., where he married Susanna Myers. They moved to Clearfield County in 1849 and purchased 100 acres of land in Jordan Twp. Hiram and Susanna resided here for the remainder of their lives, and had twelve children. Hiram died in 1892, aged 82 years. He was a consistant member of the Baptist Church, and a Republican in politics. His wife died in December 1896, age 77. Their daughters and other descendants married into many other local families such as: Straw; Thurston; Camberg; Ross, Klinger; McCracken; Witherow; and many others.
