Misc. Notes
Elsie Cordelia. Aunt Dell lived in the Bellevue area of Pittsburgh most of her married life. I'm told she used to wear big “Titanic” style hats and dressed very well. She was married to Chalmers L. McCandless on December 24, 1904 in Beaver County, PA. She did not have any children but apparently adopted and raised a baby that was left on her doorstep (Lee) who was born in 1911. She died on June 25, 1937 of pulmonary edema due to hemiplegia, and cerebral hemorrhage. She and her husband are buried in Mount Royal Cemetery, Glenshaw, Pittsburgh, Pa. I'm told that, following Aunt Deal's death, her husband married the nurse that took care of her during her illness. According to a brief obituary in the Altoona Mirror for Chalmers following his death in 1938, his wife's name was listed as Irene L. McCandless. Aunt Dell's name was actually Elsie Cordelia but went by the name of Della. She was known by her family as “Aunt Dell”. She is listed as Della on the 1920 and 1930 Federal Census reports.

Both Aunt Ivy and Uncle Bill recall visiting Aunt Dell and sleeping on her large window seat. Aunt Ivy also remembers accidentally locking herself in Aunt Dell's bathroom when she was a very small child. Aunt Dell climbed out on a window and walked across a ledge to climb in the bathroom window so that she could open the bathroom door.
