____________

James C. Bloom, died at 3 o’clock this morning at his home on South Pine Street after a four days illness from an attack of pneumonia, aged 81 years.7100

The unseen winged messenger, Death, invaded this community for the second time of the New Year, removing a life from our midst which was highly respected and honored by relatives, friends and acquaintances alike. The silent hand entered into and removed from the Bloom household the earthly life of husband and father, James C. Bloom, at the hour of 3 o'clock Wednesday morning. Mr. Bloom had been ill since Sunday Jan. 7th, pluro-pneumonia developing, and, with other complications, proved too much for his physical conditions, causing death for the above stated.

James Caldwell Bloom was the son of William and Matilda (Harley) Bloom, and was born in Bloomington, Pike Township, November 22, 1844. He attended the rural school in winter and lumbered in spring. Feeling the need of a better education in his young manhood, he attended the normal school conducted in Curwensville at that time. He taught four successful terms of school in that township, and, having a musical talent, turned his attention to instructing classes in vocal culture. He followed the musical profession for a number of years, and was known all over the county as "Singing Jim" Bloom.

On May 5th, 1864 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Hile, a daughter of James and Hannah Hile. The young couple went to housekeeping at Bloomington for a year, and moved to the farm now occupied by Sam Watts. Some thirty two years ago the family removed to Curwensville and purchased a property on South Pine street. Deceased from that time onward followed various occupations until several years ago his health failing, he was compelled to cease all manual labor.

Deceased was of the fourth generation of the first Bloom who settled in this county, the pioneer William Bloom. In politics he was a staunch Democrat of the old Jacksonian doctrine. He held a number of township offices of trust and one term as justice of the peace in this borough.

Early in his life he united with M.E. Church and up and until the time of his demise was a consistent attendent. His church affiliations a perior of 60 years; 40 years of that teaching a class in Sabbath school. Truly his ardent Christian influence has been felt in many a home while he was visting the sick aqnd afflicted.

Thirteen children were born to him and his helpmate, four of whom preceded him in death. Those who survive him are his widow, Elizabeth Bloom; Mrs. A.D. Alden of Pottstown, Pa.; Mrs. Perry Eastman of Masailon, Ohio; Miss Alice Bloom at home. The sons also grown to manhood, J. Elmer, Minner H., Verne all of Curwnesville; H and Obediah, Ned of New Bethlehem, Pa.; and Lemoin Bloom of New York City. Two brother and four sisters also living.

James C. Bloom was a friend and neighbor who will be greatly missed, not only by the members of his immediate family, but by the church and all the people who knew him. His Christian life was blameless and one to be envied. Death had no fear or terror for him,and when the call came he was confident all "was well". Funeral notice tommorow.
