Misc. Notes
Gerald Elba Bloom, second son of H. C. Bloom, was born in Curwensville, Pa., May 23, 1896. He lived with his parents for a time at Bradford and Big Run, locating in Dubois in 1900. He attended the Central Public Schools of Dubois from the time he was six years of age until sixteen years of age.

When the call for enlistment of volunteers in the World War was issued by President Wilson, Gerald was one of the first to respond. He was enlisted as a mounted orderly at Ridgeway, PA., On June 20, 1917. On August 20 they were moved to Camp Hancock, Augusta, Ga., for Winter quarters. On April 21st, 1918 they were moved to Camp Upton, N.Y., where they entrained for overseas on May 9, 1918. See account of same under Forester Worth Bloom, Gerald's brother.

After landing in France his duties as orderly was to carry messages to the commanding officer's. This duty he had to perform on foot, as no mounted orderlies were used in France. This brought him into line of engagements. They always sent three or four out with the same message to make it more sure to reach it's destination. This was one of the dangerous positions.

On September 9, 1918, he was made stable boss at Fisness, France, where he had charge of twenty-one vehicles and eighty-seven mules and horses. When the Armistice was signed he was stationed at Metz, Germany, until May 1, 1919, when they were ordered home. They arrived in New York May 9, just one year on the very day of entraining. They were ordered to Fort Sherman, Ohio, where they were honorably discharged.

He participated in the big parade of the 28th Division in Pittsburgh on May 18, 1919. While overseas he was engaged in the following battles: In France on the Fifth German offensive advance on Ong, Vesle and Meuse, and on the Argonne offensive, Thiancourt Sector.
