Your grandfather, George W. Mays was born on 14 October 1876 and he died of various urinary and renal failures caused by tertiary syphilis on 13 January 1937 in Pittsburgh. At the time, he was separated from his wife, Bessie “Tobias” and had not worked for a year at his job as fireman on the river. He died at the Marine Hospital at 40th and Penn in Pittsburgh. The hospital is no longer in existence. His remains were buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Sharpsburg, Allegheny county. Before he entered the hospital he lived at 419 Rosedale in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny, PA.

He worked for about 12 years at his job on the rivers in Pittsburgh. But, in 1918 he lived in Irvona with Bessie and signed his name on his WWI draft registration as “George Mayes.” At that time, he was a sawmill laborer in Big Run, Jefferson county, PA at the McClure & Tyson company.

On more than one document he gave his birth year as 1888, but this is not possible because he appeared on the 1880 census with his birth family, Price and Sarah. I have tried to find him on the 1930 census, but have not been able to as of this moment. A George Mays who was only 37 is on the 1930 census in Collier, Allegheny, PA in the Allegheny County Hospital for the Insane. But, there is no other identifying information to say yea or nay to that George Mays.

At last! I have proof enough to say that George Mays, son of Price and Sarah Ogden Mays married Bessie Mays Kulp. Well…I still don’t have proof of a MARRIAGE, but at least we have proof of their union and their lineages.

Looking back at other information, I see now that Charlotte was correct when she married George Waller and stated that her father was dead (in 1940.) But, why she said her mother was, too….?

Voila!

Valerie

P. S. You may want to add to your trip up here Pittsburgh and Redbank township, Armstrong county, and Porter township, Clarion county.
