CLEARFIELD PROGRESS, Clearfield, PA, March 25, 1947 Curwensville Man Killed In Rock Fall Hugh Appleton, 60, Caught In Fall At Refractories Mine

CURWENSVILLE - Caught under a fall of 30 tons of rock while working at the North American Refractories Company coal mine near Glen Richey, Hugh Appleton, 60, of Curwensville, was instantly killed Monday at 10:40 a.m. A crew of 30 men dug into the rock until 3:40 yesterday afternoon before Appleton`s badly crushed body was recovered. Coroner R. L. Williams of Houtzdale was to investigate the accident today.

Company officials said Appleton and George Mayersky were working together, removing pillars from the operation when the rock fell. Appleton shouted a warning to Mayersky just before the fall occurred. Mayersky was uninjured.
