____________

Another pioneer family that was prominent in the Curry Run area was the McCracken's. Joseph and John McCracken purchased 200 acres of land that was part of the Lewis and Weiss Warrant. This warrant was patented to Ann Smith through inheritance from her father, Josiah Matlack. Josiah received the patent in 1802. William and Ann sold their land to the McCracken's on May 3, 1837 for the sum of $500. This parcel of land was situated on the south side of the Susquehanna and consisted of the river bottom beyond Nolen's farm and included the area of McCrackens Run.

Joseph and John were the first to settle on this land and had a home next to the stream which became named for them, McCracken Run. John N. McCracken had a son, David W., who settled on land next to the Haslets and was the founder of the McCracken homestead where Joseph, Earl, and David, all descendants, resided. David and his wife Elizabeth purchased this land on Nov. 16, 1838 paying $200 initially. The agreement with George Walters and James Elder were for payments of $100 on May 1, 1840, $150 on May 1, 1841, $100 on May 1, 1842, 43, and 44. The original house and barn was log and eventually was replaced with the current [2010] structure that now stands next to the river. John "Chinaman" Newcomer built the home for the McCracken family in 1888.

David McCracken and his wife Elizabeth were both buried in 1891 in the Bower Cemetery and now rest in the Lumber City Cemetery. The original David W. McCracken has a great grandson David W. McCracken born in 1942 who is very helpful with relating some of the information pertaining to the early pioneer family. With Dave's permission I had the pleasure of visiting the old family homestead and saw the cornerstone that displays the owner of the house and the year it was built. The stone reads "W. Mc. 1888."

NOTE: The compiler of this database is not certain this is the same Joseph McCracken, but due to the dates and other information (including the fact he had a brother John) leads me to believe they are one and the same.
