In 1832, Joseph Spencer, Sr., purchased what was known as the Drauker woolen mill, located at Bridgeport, and at that time leased by Jacob Wilt and George Beatty, regarding it as a good opportunity for his sons to learn
the business. Accordingly, his eldest son, Charles was apprenticed to learn the trade.

In 1834, Charles took charge of the business and operated it for one year, when the accident occurred that caused his death.

Charles’ death resulted from an accident, while he was yet young.
