Soon after the Bell family, came … James McCracken [to Clearfield county] with their families, and settled in the neighborhood. Their wives were sisters of Squire [Arthur] Bell’s wife, and through the Squire’s influence they were induced to make their settlement.1790

James McCracken Jr. is shown on the first list of taxable men in Clearfield as a single freeman in 1806. The family is found on the 1810 census in Pike Township, Clearfield County where he has three daughters all under ten years old and a few doors away is the Hugh Jordan family. He is also listed on the 1814 tax assessment of Pike Township.

We have been unable to locate any records that can positively link James McCracken to the family stories that he moved to Iowa and died there. Their children were Sarah, Margaret, Mary, Ann, Elizabeth, Thomas, John P. H. and Nancy.

A. Y. Straw reports that all his children were born and married in Clearfield County and that he moved to Iowa prior to his death. He married Mary Jordan of Lawrence Township, a daughter of Hugh Jordan and Ann Polk. Mary Jordan was born about 1789.1294

Two James McCrackens, and a Joseph, Robert and Thomas McCracken are all listed among the earliest settlers in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania and “here before December 1806, when the first tax assessment was made.”1005
