David, the son of U.S. President John Tyler, was named after his maternal grandfather.*

While attending Washington and Lee University David dropped out to fight in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. He was present at the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomatix Court House.

David Gardiner Tyler (son of John Tyler), a Representative from Virginia; born in East Hampton, Long Island, N.Y., July 12, 1846; completed preparatory studies in a private school in Charles City County, Va., and entered Washington College (now Washington and Lee University), Lexington, Va., in 1862, leaving there in 1863 to join the Confederate Army; served as a private in the Rockbridge Artillery, First Virginia Battalion, Army of Northern Virginia, surrendering at Appomattox; went to Europe in October 1865 and for two years attended the Polytechnic School at Karlsruhe, Grand Duchy of Baden; graduated from the law department of Washington College in 1869; was admitted to the bar in 1870 and commenced practice in Richmond, Va.; director of the State lunatic asylum in Williamsburg, Va., 1884-1887; served in the State senate in 1891 and 1892; member of the board of visitors of the College of William and Mary; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1893-March 3, 1897); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1896; resumed the practice of his profession; again served in the State senate 1900-1904; elected judge of the fourteenth judicial circuit of Virginia in 1904; reelected in 1908 and 1912, and served until his death; died at “Sherwood Forest,” Charles City County, Va., September 5, 1927; interment in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Va.929

*David’s grandfather, David Gardiner (1784-1844), was killed in the explosion of a cannon when aboard the USS Princeton in 1844. Also killed were the Secretary of State, Secretary of the Navy and President Tyler’s valet who had been aboard the Amistad. (See his grandfather’s notes for more details.)
