J.A. Thompson, Postmaster Here Years Ago, Dies

Brother of S.C. Thompson passes at Summit, NJ; was 73 years old
Word was received here today by S.C. Thompson, well-known local real-estate man, of the death of his brother, John A. Thompson, a former postmaster of Manistee, at Summit, N.J., last evening.

Details of his death have not been learned. Mr. Thompson was 73 years old.
He will be remembered by many of the city's older residents. Born in Clearfield County, PA, on July 1, 18__ as a young man he came to this city in 1875. He was employed at that time as a clerk in the local postoffice when Dr. E. Ellis was postmaster. Later in 1882, he himself was appointed postmaster, a position which he held until 1888. It was in 1884 at Manistee that he was married to
Miss Ella Long, daughter of L.B. Long, a well-known local contractor, with whom he organized the present Manistee Manufacturing Co. He also erected the building now occupied by Lloyd & Smith.

Mr. and Mrs. Thompson left Manistee for Denver, Colo., later taking up residence in New York City. His wife preceded him in death five years ago.
For more than 25 years Mr. Thompson was a Wall Street broker but retired from active business two years ago. He has visited Manistee several times in recent years, and S.C. Thompson was to see him at his New Jersey home only recently.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Faith Sayles, also of Summit, N.J.; one sister, Mrs. Lillian Johnson of Battle Creek and two brothers, E.G. Thompson, publisher of the Leader, of Ligonier, Ind., and S.C. Thompson, this city.

Mr. Thompson was a member of the local Masonic Lodge during his residence here and at the time of his death was a member of the Summit lodge.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced though burial will take place at Summit.

DIES IN NEW YORK

Mrs. John A. Thompson Passes
Suddenly at Hotel Commodore

Word has been received of the death last Wednesday in New York city of Mrs. Ella A. Thompson, wife of John A. thompson, a former Manistee woman known to a large number of the city's older residents.

Mrs. Thompson, who was 60 years of age, died suddently Wednesday night at the Hotel Commodore in New York, which had been her home in recent years. She was born in Manistee, where she spent her childhood and young womanhood, and was married to Mr. Thompson, a brother of Judge Stacy C.
Thompson. Her father, the late L.B. Long, was a leading contractor of his day, and built the Central school, now the Woodrow Wilson High school. He also organized the Manistee Manufacturing company, now one of the city's major industries.

Her husband, John A. Thompson, also is well remembered here. He was a Manistee resident for 16 years and served two terms as postmaster in the eighties. Some years ago he retired from the real estate brokerage business in New York, and he and Mrs. Thompson had since made their home at the Hotel
Lucerne there.

Beside her husband Mrs. Thompson is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Faith Sayles of Berkeley Heights, N.J.
