John P. H. McCracken (spelled McCrackin) is found on the 1850 census in Bell Township giving an age of 23 (1827) and living with the Richard Ellis family. Since this is the youngest son of James and Mary McCracken it is probably safe to assume that his parents have died or moved to Iowa by this time where they reportedly died.
In 1860 he is living near Decker’s Point, Montgomery Township Indiana County halfway between Hillsdale and Marion Center. His mother-in-law Sarah Jeffries and two of her children Noah 27 and Mary E. 15 live nearby as does another brother-in-law and his family James and Mary Jefferies.
