Adam and Margaret are on the Gibson Township census in 1830 where he is listed between the ages of 20 and 30 and his wife is age 15 to 20 and they have no children. They are found on the 1840 Jay Township, Clearfield County census both age 30 to 40 with two sons under 5 and one son and two daughters 5 to 10. This family resides in the part of Jay Township that was later taken in the erection of Elk County.5019

On the 1850 census the family is listed as John S. Hicks age 37, Margaret Hicks 38, Mariah Wheeler 19, Charity Wheeler 17, David Wheeler 15, Henry B. Wheeler 13, John Wheeler 11, Martha J. Wheeler 6 and Adam I. Wheeler age 3.

On the 1860 census of Bradford Township, Clearfield County we find Smoker Hicks 45, his wife Margaret 45 and a son Vine age 9. No one in this family is found in the 1870 census. In 1880 back in Jay Township, Elk County John S. Hicks is 69, Margaret is also 69 and the family consists of a stepson David Wheeler age 43, stepson Isaac Wheeler age 33, a granddaughter Margaret Wheeler age 5 and a son Vine Hicks age 28.5019
