There is no proof of the birth date of Sarah but her father was still a single freeman in 1806. He must have married shortly after that time because he had three daughters on the 1810 census all under 10, meaning that Sarah, Margaret and Mary were all born prior to 1810.

Arthur is still a single freeman in 1806.

Arthur is found in Woodward Township in 1850 at age 44 living with Eliza and James Morgan. Eliza is 18 (1832) and may be a sixth child of Arthur and Sarah. Two doors away is his son, George Hockenberry at age 21. (1829) Also in Woodward Township three doors away is Thomas Hockenberry age 14 (1836) and living with Reed and Rosanna Alexander.

By 1852/3 Arthur was married to a young lady named Elizabeth with whom he had five more children. On the 1860 census the family still lives in Woodward Township and are listed as; Arthur 53 a cooper, Elizabeth 30 and the children are Sarah age 7, Martin age 3 and John 8 months. In 1870 he and Elizabeth are in Madera Woodward Township with two additional children Reed and Joseph.

Arthur Hockenberry died in April 1880 of heart disease (dropsy).

In June of 1880 Elizabeth is shown as a widow with four children at home John, Reed, Joseph and Nathan M. age 9.


*A Cooper is someone who makes or repairs vessels comprised of large wooden sticks, known as staves, bound together by hoops and possessing flat ends or heads. They include wooden casks, barrels, kegs, bucket tubs and butter churns.


†Dropsy is an old term for the swelling of soft tissues due to the accumulation of excess water. In years gone by, a person might have been said to have dropsy. Today one would be more descriptive and specify the cause. Thus, the person might have edema due to congestive heart failure.

Arthur Hockenberry and Sarah McCracken were first cousins, their grandmothers being sisters.

Arthur Hockenberry is found on the 1830 census of Pike Township, Clearfield, Pennsylvania with two sons under 5 years and he and his wife both aged 20 to 30. On the 1840 census of Beccaria Township, Arthur appears as head of household with one son under 5 and two ages 10 to 15 and 7 himself age 30 to 40 along with two daughters under 5 years and his wife age 30 to 40 (Sarah McCracken). His occupation was a cooper.

We know from the census reports they had at least five children and probably more and that Sarah died about 1849/50.5017
