He studied law and passed the bar; joined the Confederate Army in the Civil War, first in a subordinate position on the staff of General James Longstreet; promoted to Ass't Adjutant General and later to Chief of Staff with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. General Moxley Sorrel and Osmun Latrobe both served on the staff of General Longstreet, and in the referenced book he writes of Osmun Latrobe as his good friend. Osmun Latrobe replaced General Sorrel when the latter was promoted. In one battle at the same time both had their horses killed and were seen carrying their saddles back to camp.
He assisted his father in conduct of the Winans railroad case against the Russian government in St. Petersburg. He was prominent in the social life of Baltimore and New York
