Name: Hannss George METTLER
Sex: M
Birth: 1664 in Wuerttemberg, Germany
Note:

The original Mettler family came from Toggenburg, St. Gallen,
Switzerland. Both Protestant and Catholic Mettler families lived there.
The family in Switzerland has always been manufacturers of laces.
Mettler & Co. in that city--one of which family still occupies the ancestral
home and operates the largest lace factory in Switzerland, employing
over 4,000 people.

During the period 1510-1732, the Mettlers and other families became
highly dissatisfied with the unsatisfactory religious conditions as existed in
the world at that time, and were regarded as "fanatics." They were
followers of John Calvin, a great Protestant leader of the 1500's, and
took a prominent part in the Reformation, so much so that they were
deported and settled in Bavaria. For the same reason, they were
deported to the Alsace region (now a part of Germany). From there they
went to Normandy, then to the southwest coast of Ireland, to the
northern coast, then to Scotland, Wales, England and finally to Holland.
Due to severe religious persecution to anyone who opposed absolute
rule of the Catholic Church, the Hollanders made it so unsatisfactory to
them that they, with all of the other Calvinists, emigrated to America in
September 1732, settling in New Amsterdam (now New York City).

Subsequent to 1736, some families went to Welland, Ontario, Canada
and others settled in Rockaway Valley, Hunterdon, NJ in the area along
Rockaway Creek. Later some moved to Bethlehem and Alexandria
Townships after the Rockaway land was put up for sale.

The origin of the name "Mettler" seems to have come from the word
"matlen"--meaning "a settlement between 2 places." In ancient times,
Mettlers lived in a small village half-way between Appenzell and
Toggenburg, Switzerland. It is also presumed that the name may have
been derived from "media luna" which is Latin for "half-moon." The
family crest of the Mettler of Toggenburg family shows a golden
half-moon with 2 golden stars on a dark blue background.

New Jersey. Another family from Holland, William and Johann Georg
Mettler 1696- 1745 emigrated to New York in 1732 (or '34); in 1736
settled in Rockaway Valley, Hunterdon, now Morris County New
Jersey- his 9 children included Johann Philip 1724-83 ( see Niagara
below); and William 1743-1840- who in turn had five sons: Jonathan
1774-1867; Philip 1776-1855; Matthias 1778-1845; William
1778-1848; and John 1780-1849. Most of the American Mettler
families- possibly more than a Hundred- belong to this branch. The
original immigrants appear to have been born in Germany, Oral tradition
has it that their ancestors came from Switzerland. Unfortunately, records
in those days were scarce and sometimes unreadable, because many
people were illiterate; some couldn't even write their names; and the
spelling of some individuals changed in different records.
