Evans, with his father and step-mother Harriet left Winter Quarters in May, 1848, for the West, but death of their oxen caused them to drop out and to make a stop in Savannah, Missouri. They remained there where his worked at his trade of blacksmithing until June 1850 and reached the Salt lake Valley in September.
