Edward worked as a coal miner, coal tippler, and coal strip miner.
He served in the US Army from March 1967 until January 1969. While he was in the army he was a helicopter mechanic. He then worked as a wood cutter in theloggine business.
During this time he had two bad accidents – on October 27, 1985, a tree fell on him breaking his left arm and left foot, it also injured his back. On October 17, 1987, he had an accident where both feet were smashed breaking 17 bones.
On December 23, 1984, Ed and Bonnie lost their home and all of their possessions in a fire.
