Misc. Notes
1900, 1910: mother of 10, 8 living. 5-generation photograph taken at her 84th birthday party in Lakemont included her, Hannah Mays Bloom, Valeria Bloom Freeman, Mable Freeman Weakland and Carl Weakland.

Mary (Anderson) Fuller Mays. Great Grandma Mary Mays was born in Clarion County, PA in 1841 [sic]. She smoked a corncob pipe, which she kept in a little striped pouch beneath her apron.

There is speculation that our Indian ancestry may have came from her line, but I am not certain of that fact. Her maiden name was Anderson. Her parents were Francis Patton and Mary (Coursin) Anderson, who are buried in Churchville Cemetery, Curllsville, Clarion County, PA.

She married her first husband, who is listed on the 1860 US Federal Census as Evans Fuller. The 1860 census lists the family as living with her parents. Mary and Evans had two children: David C. and Mary Catherine (Cass). He apparently passed away shortly after the birth of Aunt Cass. She married Grandpap Mays on September 3, 1861. They had several other children that we are aware of: Hannah E., Nancy E., Reuben C., Peter F., Elsie Cordelia and Laura Belle (our grandmother). There are two children unknown to us listed on the 1870 and 1880 census: Lorenzo T., and Jesse E. Per Clearfield County Historical Society, the little boy Jesse E. died as a small child. They had no information on Lorenzo T.

My suspicion is that he may have also died as a young child.

Grandma Mays was 89 when she died on 2/21/1929 of left cerebral appplexy, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Her grave was unmarked for several years, however, a few years ago Uncle Bill had a headstone placed to mark her grave. He remembers Grandma Mays always asking our grandmother “where's that little Billy?” He said he used to help her out of her chair and to walk to the table, etc. He said she always had a special love for him as a little boy and he felt she deserved to have a headstone.653
____________

Great Grandma Mays was born in Clarion County, Pa. in 1840. She smoked a corncob pipe, which she kept in a little striped pouch beneath her apron. (Still in our family). The pouch bears a small burn hole in it, which I am told happened when the preacher showed up at her door and she hastily shoved the pipe in the pouch so he wouldn't see it. We believe our Native American ancestry is through her line.

Grandma Mays was the daughter of Francis Patton and Mary Coursin Anderson, who are buried in Churchville Cemetery, Curlsville, Clarion County, Pa. She married her first husband, who is listed on the 1860 Federal Census as Evans Fuller and they had two children, David C. and Mary Catherine (Aunt Cass). After her first husband passed away at the age of 24, she married our Great Grandpap, Moses Mays, on September 3, 1861. Together they raised her two children and had eight more, six of whom lived to adulthood, Peter Francis, Hanna Elmira, Nancy Effie, Reuben Caldwell, Elsie Cordelia, and our grandmother, Laura Belle. It is believed Lorenzo T. and Jessie E. died as infants or small children.

After Grandpap Mays died in 1903, Grandma Mays came to live with my grandparents, Laura and Homer Smeltzer in Altoona. She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery near her son Reuben and his wife Annie (Bartow) Mays.

Who is Mary Fuller Mays?

Moses Mays. Uncle Bill recalls that the railroad engineer on the run North from Cresson would get coal from the mines up there. On the return trip, the train would go by Rosebud. The railroaders would always save large lumps of coal and roll them off the train down into the family's yard so that they would have something to heat their home with.

Grandpap Mays was a skilled whittler and woodworker. Aunt Ivy still displays a mantel clock which he made. My grandmother once said that Grandpap Mays made a sled for her out of hickory limbs, so she could play in the snow. People around the area called upon Grandpap Mays for doctoring their animals. Anytime there was a medical need, or birthing time for cows or other animals, they would call Moses to come. This brought a little bit of money into the family. Aunt Ivadelle has the only known picture of Grandpap in a full goatee, mustache, and longer hair – sort of Civil War style. He looks rather handsome to me. It is Aunt Ivy's understanding that Grandpap Mays was a nice, gentle man and recalls that our grandmother always said how much she loved her Dad.

I have recently discovered from my research on Ancestry.com that it is possible that Grandpap Mays may have been a twin. Both he and his brother Isaac have the birthdate of 6/6/1837, although some census reports state his birth year as 1836. It has been stated by more than one researcher that he was a twin. I had never heard anything about this before, but I'm sure its possible. As I get further into this, I hope to find out much more information about this and other things.

Grandpap Mays appears on the 1900 census, which would make him at least 63 years of age at that time. Grandma Mays is buried in Greenwood Cemetary in Altoona next to Uncle Rube and Aunt Annie, and not buried beside Grandpap Mays. It is thought that this might be because Grandpap died first, up in Clearfield County, and Grandma then came to live with Mom in Altoona, where she eventually died. They may not have taken her back to Clearfield for burial due to the cost or any number of other reasons.

Per information obtained from the Clearfield County HS, Grandpap Mays died on 2/24/1903, which would make him age 65 at his death, and is buried in McClure Cemetary, in Curwensville, Pike Township, Clearfield County, there being no headstone. According to their information his father, Peter, is buried there also and has a weatherbeaten, but legible, tombstone. They believed his mother, Effie Bloom Mays, is buried in another cemetary. This surprised me because her parents (John and Susannah Bloom), and grandparents William, Sr. and Mary Bloom, are also buried in McClure.

GGG Grandfather William Bloom, Sr.'s name is listed on a historical plaque in McClure Cemetary as having served in the Revolutionary War. I have information several generations back through the maternal Bloom line. Apparently, they were a prominent family in the area.

Since obtaining the above information, I have located the original handwritten death records for both Grandpap Moses and his mother, Effie Bloom Mays, from the website PAGenweb, which indicates the same death date as listed above from the Historical Society. However, per these records, both Grandpap Moses and his mother Effie are buried in Fruit Hill Cemetary, Ansonville, Clearfield County. It lists Moses' cause of death as asthma, having been ill for three weeks, at the age of 65, and lists GG Grandmother Effie as having died of “old age” on August 15, 1900, at the age of 91 years.653
____________

Great Grandpap Moses Mays was an asthmatic and had poor health most of the time. As a result, he was unable to work full time, and so the family was poor. They lived in the village of Rosebud, near Coalport, PA.

Grandpap Mays was a skilled whittler and woodworker. My Aunt still displays a beautiful, intricately carved mantel which he made. My grandmother once said that he made a sled for her out of hickory limbs so she could play in the snow. People around the area called upon Grandpap Mays for doctoring their animals. Anytime there was a medical need, or birthing time for cows or other animals, they would call Moses to come. This brought a little bit of money into the family.

It is our family's understanding that Grandpap Mays was a nice, kind and gentle man, and our grandmother (Laura) always said how much she loved her Dad. A nice legacy.

Grandpap Mays died on 2/24/1903, at age 65. Clearfield County Historical Society records state that Moses was buried in McClure Cemetery in Curwensville, Pike Township, however, the original handwritten death records for both Grandpap Moses and his mother, Effie Bloom Mays indicates both Moses and his mother are buried in Fruit Hill Cemetery, Ansonville, Clearfield County. It lists Moses as having died of asthma, the duration of illness being three weeks.

I would have loved to have known him.3676
