Mr. Preston C. F. West, chief consulting engineer of the Calumet & Hecia Mining Company, died of heart failure in Boston on January 11. He was born in 1835, and had just begun the study of civil and mining engineering when the Civil War broke out. He served throughout the whole of the war and then became a mining engineer in Central and South America. He made a number of surveys on the Pacific coast for Professor Agassiz, and in this way became identified with the Calumet & Hecia property.4108 ____________
I am trying to identify the officers in this picture with William F Smith in 1862 at Malvern Hill. http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/h?ammem/cwnyhs:@field(DOCID+@lit(ad09050))
I have identified Preston West as one of Smith's officers, but haven't been able to find a picture of him to see if he is in the picture.4109 ____________
