3Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1825, to July 1, 1829, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut., 2d Infantry, July 1, 1829. On leave of absence, July 1, 1829, to Sep. 20, 1830. Resigned, Sep. 20, 1830.
Civil History. — Asst. Engineer in the service of Pennsylvania, 1830-35. Chief Engineer of Columbia and Philadelphia Railroad, Pa., 183"-36. Resident Engineer in the service of the State of Kentucky, employed in making surveys and improving the navigation of the Cumberland and other Rivers,*1837-39. Superintendent of construction of Dams, North Branch (of the Susquchannah) Division, Pennsylvania Canal, 1840-41. Regulator of Weigh-Locks and Scales, on Pennsylvania Canals and Railroads, 1844-45. Antes was the child Mrs. Carson wished to kidnap, in order to obtain from the Governor the pardon of Smith. He well remembered how carefully he was guarded in door [sic] until after the execution of Smith.
Antes was educated at West Point, graduated with high honors, and was soon afterwards sent by the Government to England on business connected with the railway system, then in it’s infancy here.
The Governor said, should Mrs. Carson succeed in the abduction of his child, the law should, nevertheless, have its course. He was spared the trial, but all who knew his stern integrity, felt assured that the law would have been honored, even had he been put to so severe a test.
Antes was the engineer who designed and built the large stone bridges over the Schuyikill at-the-falls and Peacock’s lock, above Reading, and one at Schuyikil Haven, and a number of small ones along the line of the Philadelphia and Reading railroad.
