Matthew was shot at the battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia in 1863, captured, and paroled home. He died in November 1863 from a "chest wound," according to our family tree. Matthew had a brother named Levi Lanburn Tate who also fought in the Civil War and died in Washington, D.C., in 1927 or 1929.3545
