____________

Samuel Sheridan Hoopengardner by youngest daughter Frances Hoopengardner, September 1999.

We all called our dad POP. I best remember him as all ways working. When he worked as stable boss for Davis Coal Co., we lived next to Nethen Hill road going from Elk Garden, W.Va. to the Nethen Hill church. This house was just above the railroad station. At this time POP was in charge of the horses and the farm land. He was always busy.

On Friday night he would bath and dress to attend his IOOF Lodge meeting. Sunday he would go to church. I never knew POP to drink, use tobacco of any type or to swear.

When the depression hit, we moved to where I currently live. POP still stayed busy by working his Garden or doing odd jobs around the house. He also worked March Deans Garden, got their coal and wood into the house. POP never sat down to a meal without first blessing his food and good life. He had pneumonia several times and passed away January 1934.

KEYSER TRIBUNE, Keyser, WV. March 22, 1922. Samuel Hoopengarner was hurt about the head by a fall of the slate in the mines this week. While not seriously hurt yet he will not be able to work for several weeks.247

Misc. Notes
Florence Willis as recalled by youngest daughter; Frances Hoopengarner.

MOM ran the home and her word was the Law. She was always working, cooking or sewing. There wasn't anything MOM couldn't do. In the winter she made quilts, rugs or was sewing. MOM baked a lot of pies. She was always busy doing something having eight step-children, six children and one grand child to rear.

Additionally MOM was always there to help me and my brothers and sisters with our children. When a new birth was due MOM was always the first to be there. She was very good at looking ahead and planning for the future. MOM lost her sight in one eye and the following year she became totally blind, being blind for thirteen years passing away November 1964.

My grand-mother (Florence Hoopengarner) was one of the kindness and nicest people you could ever hope to know. A caring and loving lady always looking for a way to help her family. These same traits show up in most of her children especially my mother (Frances) and my uncle Russell Hoopengarner. By: Glenn L. Watts, Jr. 247
