FORT ASHBY, W.Va. - Gilbert "Gil" Theodore Watts, 63, of Fort Ashby, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at Bethesda Naval Hospital.Born July 1, 1941, in Elk Garden, he was the son of Frances (Hoopengardner) Watts, Elk Garden and the late Glenn L. Watts Sr.

He was also preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Dale Watts.

He retired from the U.S. Navy with 20 years service. He served on seven different ships, the USS Forrestal, USS Neosho, USS Denebola, USS Neptune, USS MacDonough, USS Shenandoah, and the USS Independence. He finished his career as a company commander at Great Lakes Naval Training Command. He was awarded three Good Conduct Medals, as well as a National Defense Service Medal.

Following his military career, he spent 15 years in the heating and air conditioning business.

He was a member of the Cumberland Seventh Day Adventist Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 41 years, Faye (Bennear) Watts; two sons, David A. Watts, Fort Ashby and Anthony W. Watts and wife Carol, Fort Ashby; four brothers, Glenn L. Watts Jr. and wife Sharon, Columbia, S.C., Clarence D. Watts and wife Chris, Baltimore, Danny Watts and wife Charlotte, Elk Garden and Gary Watts and wife Linda, Keyser; and two sisters, Sheila Harr, Severna Park and Marlene Simmons and husband Robert, Hartmansville; and six granchildren.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc., Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted at the Cumberland Seventh Day Adventist Church, 800 Hilltop Drive, Cumberland, Sunday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Harold Whiteman and Elder Randy Murphy officiating.

Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the local combined veterans honor guard.

Gil was diagnosed with bone cancer in 1993. He was given a short life expectancy. With the Lord's help and many supportive prayers, his life was extended by 11 years. Gil was always grateful and thankful for the additional time he had on this earth.247
