His active years were for the most part spent in lumbering, and as raftsman and pilot on the Susquehanna river he became thoroughly familiar with that stream, upon which he has had many interesting experiences.
The average raftsman was compensated 50 cents per day and on his arrival downriver had to walk back to Clearfield County.2565
