When only a mere boy he entered the Revolutionary army as a private, but, on account of his bravery, he was promoted from time to time, so that, on leaving the service, he had won the spurs of a colonels commission. He died at the age of seventy-four.

“Col. John Holt ... settled in Bald Eagle Valley in 1782, is said to have been the first white man who followed the Indian trail to Snow Shoe, (Centre, PA) to hunt game....”
“The settler in Bald Eagle Valley, the love of hunting leading him to enter the Snow Shoe region, and it was his custom to spend a few weeks in the fall of each year in this pastime. He gained his title of "colonel " in the Revolutionary war, and took part in several battles, among them being the engagement at Germantown. He died in the summer of 1831 in his seventy-sixth year. Eight children survived.”
