Obituary

The following is her obituary published in the Clearfield Republican on Friday, August 3, 1900:

Mrs. Effie Mays, widow of the late Peter Mays, died at the old homestead in Knox township, Tuesday, July 24, 1900, aged 91 years.

Mrs. Mays was a daughter of the late John R. Bloom, one of the pioneer settlers of the county; was born in Pike Township and spent her entire life in Clearfield County. Her father was a son of the first William Bloom who came to Clearfield county in 1798 and settled along the river above Curwensville.

In 1836, Effie Bloom and Peter Mays were married and at once went to housekeeping in what is now Knox township. To this union were born a large family of sons and daughters. The following survive: Isaac, of Knox, Moses*, of Knox, Thomas, Coalport; Price, Jordan; John B., Irvona; James, Bernwinsdale; David P., Knox; Mrs. Hannah McCracken, Knox, and Mrs. Mary Patterson, Jordan. Peter Mays died in 1888 at the age of 76 [sic].† Mrs. Mays is also survived by her brothers, George Bloom, of Knox; John I. Bloom, Pike; Mrs. Abigail Garrison, Pike; Mrs. Sarah Leech, Pike; also, by 46 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.

She was a lifelong member of the Fruit Hill Presbyterian Church. The funeral took place Wednesday from her late home. Rev. Williams in charge of the ceremony.

*Moses was inadvertently omitted from the original obituary, but did survive her by three years, dying on February 24, 1903.2129

Obituary

Death of Peter Mays — Peter Mays, one of the oldest residents of Knox Township, died on Sunday the 26th instant, aged 75 years [sic]. He had enjoyed good health until recently. He was called to the sick bed of his brother Jonathan, residing in Clarion county, who died the day after Peter’s arrival there. On his return home he manifested decline and soon passed beyond the river to join his brother.2128
