William settled in Snow Shoe township, Centre county, in 1822, and was prominently connected with the development of his locality as a farmer and lumberman.

He was the only person who was killed in the accident on the Snowshoe railroad, June 11, 1878. As he was on his way to a political meeting the train, a local freight with a coach attached, broke through a trestle and fell sixty-four feet.

His death was a great blow to his family, and caused sincere mourning throughout the community. He belonged to the Masonic order, and was a Knight Templar.

The Bellefonte and Snowshoe Railroad, in operation from 1859 to 1881, was a coal-hauling railroad in Centre County, Pennsylvania.

A serious wreck occurred on the railroad on June 11, 1877, when the Miller's Spring Trestle collapsed under the southbound mixed train from Snow Shoe to Bellefonte and it fell 55 feet into a ravine. One passenger was killed, and two passengers and four crewmen were injured.1907

On the 11th of June, the passenger train, consisting of engine, passenger, and three freight cars, while on its trip from Snow Shoe to Bellefonte, broke through Miller's Spring trestle, which spanned a ravine 650 feet wide, and 55 feet deep; about three quarters of the trestle was carried down with the train into the ravine below.

One passenger, William Holt, of Moshannon, was killed; James L. Somerville, mine contractor, was injured about the heaad and body; his son Harry, a boy of ten years old, had his leg broken; E.A. Nolan, conductor, injured about the head; William Temple, engineer, and R.O. Hinton, brakeman, about the body; Jacob Rapp, fireman, injured in back and ankles. The injured have all recovered, and are now, performing theior regular duties.1908
