In 1824 land was donated by [a] Philip Antes to build a school [in Lawrence Township].949
____________

Philip Antis [sic] donated a piece of ground near on the public road from Clearfield to Curwensville, on which a school-house was built about 1824. John Patton, Sr., (1782-1851) father of Congressman John Patton (1823-1897), was the master here in 1826.

It was here, in this house, under the tutorship of his father, that Hon. John Patton attended school for the first time.834

[Was this Philip Antes the father-in-law (1759-1834) or brother-in-law (1781-1862) of John Patton Sr. It is not known for certain but was probably one or the other and most likely the senior Philip.]
____________

Philip Antes died in Lawrence township, Clearfield County, Aug. 14, 1831. He was a son of Henry Antes, sheriff of Northumberland County in 1782, and grandson of Rev. Henry Antes, "the pious and active German Reformed layman of Frederick township."

Philip was born at Falkner Swamp, Montgomery Co., Aug. 26, 1759, removed while young to what is now Dauphin County, married Susanna Williams, Feb. 21, 1780, and removed to Nippenose [Lycoming Co., PA], to what was known as the Little Mill, and came to Bald Eagle May 3, 1787. He is more especially referred to in the general history of the Methodist Church. His wife died May 2, 1826, in Clearfield County.

Their children, Frederick, born Jan. 18, 1781, lived and died on the farm opposite Eagle Forge; John, born Oct. 4, 1782, died at his son's, in Moshannon, in 1852; Henry, born Dec. 4, 1784, lived and died in Harrisburg; Philip, Jr., lived near Clearfield, and died at his daughter's, in the town of Clearfield; Polly, born June 3, 1787, married Hiram J. Miller, and afterwards Isaiah Goodfellow; Elizabeth, born July 31, 1794, married Moses Boggs, associate judge of Clearfield County for seventeen years; Susan (Mrs. John Patton, Sr.), mother of Gen. John Patton, of Curwensville, still survives, at the age of ninety-two years, born May 10, 1791, at Antes Mill, now Curtin.950,844
____________

In 1787 [Philip] moved up the West Branch of the Susquehanna (this would have been from the Jersey Shore area, where his father was living at the time) to the area of Bald Eagle Creek, settling near later Curtin iron works. In that area, he built a grist mill,* started Methodist meetings. In 1829 he donated the land for the first Methodist Episcopal church in Clearfield County.945

*A gristmill or grist mill is a building in which grain is ground into flour. In many countries these are referred to as corn mills or flour mills.3

____________

This source lists her birth dates as 17 Sep 1755 and death date as 26 May 1826.948
____________

This source also lists her death date as 26 May 1826. But the same source separately records her birthdate as 9.14.1775 and death date as 5.2.1826, which is in agreement with General Source data.952
____________

Maria’s birth year may in fact have been 1755. Their marriage date would be incorrect as Susannah would have been only 5 years old if born in 1775. Need to see photo of headstone to help verify these dates.3
