Elizabeth, born in 1821 in Centre County, became the wife of Benjamin Franklin Harley (b. 1810), who was engaged in the foundry business in Limestone, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, where she died May 4, 1864.

She had buried three children before her death: Mary Agnes (1854-1862), Margaret Rachael died when seventeen months old, and Roxanne died in infancy, leaving six children, ages according to the 1850 census – James (8), Joseph (6), Franklin [unlisted], Elizabeth (9), Jane (2) and Katherine (4), all of whom are married. [Benjamin, age 3 months, is listed in the census. Since Franklin, age 10, is listed in the 1860 census, this is likely the same person.] He is referred to as Benjamin Franklin Harley below.

According to the 1850 census – James (8), Joseph (6), Franklin (unlisted), Elizabeth (9), Jane (2) and Katherine (4), all of whom are married. (Benjamin, age 3 months, is listed in the census. Since Franklin, age 10, is listed in the 1860 census, this is likely the same person.) He is referred to as Benjamin Franklin Harley in this document.

Benjamin emigrated to the United States in 1831 through Castle Garden, New York. He learned the foundry* trade in New Orleans before moving to Pennsylvania. He was engaged in the foundry business in Clarion County, PA.602

The Harley boys from Scotland were founders, who worked in or owned a foundry. One of the Lines or Harleys owned a large piece of property and a grocery store in Luthersburg, PA.  I forget which family it was.609

*A foundry is a factory that produces metal casting. Metals are cast into shapes by melting them into a liquid, pouring the metal in a mold, and removing the mold material or casting after the metal has solidified as it cools. The most common metals processed are aluminum and cast iron. However, other metals are also used.610

[Benjamin] will be well remembered by the older residents of this place [Clearfield County], as having for some years carried on business at the old foundry, which stood on the ground now occupied by the Public School building.606
