Obituary
Wilbur E. Lines Sr., 86 of Clearfield died on Sunday, December 21, 2003 at Clearfield Hospital.
He was born on February 13, 1917 in Curwensville, a son of the late Harry Lines and Nora (Wertz) Lines Ellinger.
Mr. Lines was employed in several industries during his career, working as a coal miner, a truck driver with the brickyards and on the ships docked in Lake Erie. He also worked in highway construction and as a self employed house painter.
He was a member of the Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post #6, the F. Michael Sicks Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #1785 of Clearfield, the Clearfield American Legion and VFW Posts Honor Guard and a life member of the Second Ward Fire Company.
A veteran of the US Army, he served during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret L. (Luce) Lines, whom he wed May 18, 1936 in Clearfield; three children, Harry L. Lines, Wilbur E. Lines, Jr. and his wife Ginger, and Carol Spingola, all of Clearfield; nine grandchildren, Delphine Jordon, Charlie Lines, Eddie Lines, Gretchen Witherow, Robert Spingola, Valerie Spingola, Stephen Spingola, Deanna Conaway and Lori Lee Lines 19 great-grandchildren, a brother and two sisters, Eli Lines of Akron, Ohio, Ruby Ingram of Canton, Ohio and Lillian Henderson of Hyattsville, Md; and numerous nieces and nephews
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Orville, John, Elmer, Ruben, Richard, Melvin and Monroe and a sister Maxine.
Funeral services will be held at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Michael Shingler officiating.
Interment will follow in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the members of the Clearfield American Legion and VFW Posts.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM.

Wilbur’s name appears in the U.S. Census which shows that in April of 1930, at the age of thirteen, he was a pupil at the Glen Mills School House of Refuge for Boys located in Thornbury Township, Delaware County, PA. This is the same school where his younger brother Eli would also later be a student.133,49

Wilbur enlisted in the U.S. Army with his brother Reuben in the spring of 1937 and would be stationed with the Coast Artillery Corps at Fort Monroe, VA where their brother Elmer had served, while on his second enlistment.112

During his first enlistment Wilbur attended Bakery school and became a Baker. His son Wilbur Jr., has the certificate/diploma when he graduated from the school. He served in the Army for two years in the late 1930’s and would enlist again with the outbreak of World War Two.
Wib sent home boxes of memorabilia while he was in Europe, including a German holiday flag, which is sister Carol has, a Lugar pistol and a German knife. The pistol was given to uncle Eli. [I believe it may have later been given to my first cousin Florence Lines]. The knife was owned by a captured German S.S. soldier and he gave to uncle Wib along with a photo of the German wearing the knife. His son Wilbur owned the knife but it was taken by his wife Ginger when they were divorced.
The war “messed him up.” The family could really “see a difference in his personality” after his return home. Wilbur would enlist an additional time, a third time, fsometime following the end of the war.33

After the end of the war with his brother Eli he visited the Nazi concentration camp KZ Innsbruck-Reichenau near Innsbruck, Austria. While there they witnessed the digging of mass graves and the burial of thousands of Jewish dead. Wilbur was discharged on December 30, 194549,138

Wilbur and his brother Richard lived in Philadelphia in about 1954 in an apartment building at 1824 S. (?) Venango. Located near Roosevelt Park, Wilbur lived there with his family and worked at a gas station across from the “International Airport” at what was known as “The Circle.” This was just prior to his moving to Akron where he and his brother Richard worked with his bother Eli.139

Wilbur's brother Eli got him as well as his brother Richard a job at the R.C.A. Rubber Company in Akron, OH where Eli worked. Wib was the first of the two to quit his job and return home to PA.35

Wilbur’s nephew Richard Lee Gleason remembers visiting his uncle on several occasions in the early 1960s at a house that was underground, and beneath a small hill in Clearfield. That house was purchased by Wilbur’s son “Snooks” in 1963. Snooks had gone to Kentucky to work and his parents were losing the house they were renting [I believe he said they were going to tear it down] and so he put his parents in the underground house.
Two or three years later “Snooks” would move them into the house where they lived until they died. It’s the same house Gleason was in when, with his cousin Bill Lines, they visited with Snooks and his mother in 2007. Snooks removed the old underground house sometime after moving his parents out.3,33

Margaret L. Lines, 90 of Clearfield died on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at her residence.
She was born on September 30, 1917 in Clearfield, a daughter of the late Laverne and Sara (Law) Luce.
Mrs. Lines was formerly employed by the Clearfield Employment office and prior to that was employed by Dumont Airplane and Marine Co. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Clearfield and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Second Ward Fire Company.
She is survived by three children, Carol Spingola of Clearfield, Harry L. Lines of Clearfield, and Wilbur Lines, Jr. and his wife Ginger of Clearfield; nine grandchildren, Delphine Jordan, Charles Lines, Edward Lines, Gretchen Witherow, Robert Spingola, Jr., Valerie Spingola, Stephen Spingola, Deanna Conaway and Lorilee Lines; 19 great grandchildren, 3 great great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold Luce and wife Dorothy of Clearfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marg worked between six and ten years as a custodian at the State Employment office in Clearfield and got good benefits. It was her last job before she retired. She was a small woman and related how she had to test for the job [physically?] and how the men that were also applying laughed at her. When she was called back she was told she was the one to get the last laugh, she got the job!
She suffered from a mild case of Dementia and passed away from Cancer at her son Wilbur’s home. The last three days of her life she played cards with her daughter Carol, granddaughters Lori and Deanna and was even beating them at the game.33
